No Referral Needed: Guide to Direct Access Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy in South Jordan Jan13th 2026

While there are a number of situations where your primary care doctor may recommend you to a physical therapist for a few different needs, there are also situations where you may have a pretty good idea that you require PT even before seeing your doctor. In these cases, are you able to simply go directly to a physical therapist for help?

At ImPackt Physical Therapy, we’re proud to offer the best physical therapy services you’ll find around South Jordan, Riverton, and nearby parts of Utah. We’re also happy to tell you that due to a new direct access law passed in Utah in the last couple of years, you can now come directly to our team for help without the referral of a doctor! Here are some of the basics on this law, plus what to know about the process, insurance implications, and other elements of direct access to a physical therapist in Utah.

Utah’s New Direct Access Law

It’s true that in some states or local municipalities around the country, patients must indeed obtain a referral from their primary care doctor (or another similar doctor) before seeing a physical therapist. This was even the case in Utah for some time, but SB0196, from 2025, changed all that.

This bill officially recognized physical therapists as primary care providers, a major change from previous Utah law. That means that patients can now seek out a physical therapist as their first point of contact for musculoskeletal issues, without having to go through another doctor first.

This change is incredibly significant as it gives patients more autonomy and choice over their healthcare options. It also allows them to save time, money, and potentially unnecessary treatments by going straight to a physical therapist who is trained in treating musculoskeletal conditions. Additionally, this new law recognizes the specialized training and education that physical therapists receive, making them qualified to act as primary care providers.

Process to Go Through

As a result of SB0196, the process for seeing a physical therapist in Utah is now far simpler and more convenient for patients. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Make an Appointment: The first step is to make an appointment with a qualified physical therapist. This can be done directly, without needing a referral from a physician.
  2. Initial Evaluation: During the initial evaluation, the physical therapist will assess your condition and any potential underlying causes or contributing factors.
  3. Individualized Treatment Plan: Based on the evaluation, the physical therapist will create an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals.
  4. Treatment Sessions: You will then begin attending regular treatment sessions where you will receive hands-on therapy, exercises, and education to help you manage your condition.
  5. Ongoing Monitoring and Adjustments: Your progress will be regularly monitored and adjustments may be made to your treatment plan as needed to ensure you are making progress towards your goals.

Insurance Implications

Now, one potential complicator here is the insurance side of things. There are some insurers or plans that may still require a doctor’s referral before covering physical therapy. This is something you’ll want to check with your insurance provider before starting treatment. However, most providers do cover physical therapy for conditions that warrant it.

Additionally, some providers may limit the number of sessions or have other restrictions in place. It’s important to understand your coverage and any potential limitations so you can work with your physical therapist on creating a plan that fits within your insurance coverage.

How to Get Started

If you’re dealing with any kind of pain or related issue that you feel would benefit from physical therapy, you have multiple options. If you’re not totally sure PT is the right approach, there’s nothing wrong with seeing your primary care doctor first to get their read and advice on the situation.

However, if you’re confident that physical therapy is the way to go (especially if you’ve dealt with similar issues through PT in the past), you can always reach out to a physical therapist directly. As we’ve noted here, SB0196 made it fully legal for physical therapists to treat patients without a physician referral, so you can save some time and money by going this route.
